The Final and Solidarity motions voted unanimously in the National Assembly on April 9, 2022 – Milan
TOWARDS THE GENERAL AND SOCIAL STRIKE OF EVERYONE ON MAY 20, 2022
Saturday, April 9, one more step towards the construction of the General and Social Strike established jointly for May 20, against the war, the war economy and the war government. There are many acronyms and groups that participated, both from grassroots and combative unions as well as from other political and social realities (spaces and experiences, translator's note).
During the day, the assembly was well attended. It received the contributions of 36 face-to-face and virtual interventions. All the present realities have thus demonstrated that they have the interest and/or adherence to the united path proposed for the construction of a trade union and social movement, against the war, the consequent repercussions on the workers and the popular class in general, a path that sees in the general and social strike of May 20 only the beginning of a shared work that leads to a renewed social and political leadership of the workers.
There have been numerous and significant interventions in the areas invaded by NATO bases and war actions, in particular from Sicily with the “No to MUOS”* and from Sardinia in relation to Decimomannu (a military base of the Italian army located in the island of Sardinia) that had a similar content.
Solidarity was expressed with the port workers of Salonicco and Genoese ones who opposed the shipment of weapons, a position in which the assembly recognizes itself, as well as opposition to the increase in military spending.
The following are the two motions approved by the participants in the national assembly in Milan that will be summoned to share the construction of the action day of the General Strike on May 20.
FINAL MOTION
The assembly convened in Milan on April 9, 2022 condemns the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation, which risks starting a wide-ranging war in Europe.
The origins of the conflict go back to the expansionist objectives of the NATO countries towards the east and to the hegemonic claims of Russia.
After 45 days of war, the consequences of this conflict are evident to all: military operations are causing thousands of deaths, enormous destruction, millions of displaced people.
The war economy has repercussions all over the world, in Europe, directly affected by inflation already at 7.6% with vertiginous energy bills and in the living and working conditions of the workers and popular masses, which are evidently worsening, and in the rest of the world, Asia and Africa in the lead, who see their food survival in danger as the price of cereals and food generally has skyrocketed.
The Milan assembly, which was attended by grassroots unions, social and political realities, pacifist, environmentalist and antimilitarist movements, calls on the entire world to stop the imperialist war, to direct our government and the European government to say Enough of military spending, to invest these resources in the fundamental sectors for the well-being of the populations, housing, health, transportation, school and for the restoration and safeguarding of the purchasing power of salaries, pensions and guaranteed income for the unemployed.
The assembly undertakes to organize the mobilization in the workplace and in society generally through all possible visibility initiatives and to work so that April 25 and May 1 are two important unitary dates of the social movement of opposition to war.
The assembly calls a general strike for May 20 to stop the war, the war economy and the war government. It summons the popular masses, the workers, the pacifist, antimilitarist, environmental and social realities to mobilize from here and beyond to build a great movement of mobilization and struggle all together.
SOLIDARITY MOTION
The assembly called by the grassroots unions, gathered in Milan on April 9 to call the general strike on May 20, condemns the provocations that in recent months the grassroots and conflictive unionism has been the target from the State apparatus.
Provocations that point out to everyone the danger faced by those who continue to fight for the rights and leadership of workers in a context of suffocating war propaganda.
This makes even clearer the anti-capitalist character of the battle that awaits us against a compact alignment supported by militarized information that pushes more and more towards the external and internal war that we will continue to oppose.
