Savas Matsas, leader of the EEK of Greece (with whom the PO of Argentina formed its "international", the CRCI), is an example of how far revisionism and opportunism can go of the currents that speak in the name of Trotskyism.
As recently as on May 11 Matsas participated of an online meeting for the "Republic Day in the Donetsk People's Republic",organized bythe eastern Ukrainian oligarchs, Stalinism and Putin's United Russia party. At that meeting, instead of the allies of the masses of the Donetsk and the Donbass as a whole, there were their greatest enemies: those who were gracious to the partition of Ukraine to prevent the triumph of the revolution that in 2014 stood up to the cry "We want the USSR back!" against imperialist looting plans. Savas Matsas was then in a meeting with the executioners of the masses of Donetsk and all of Ukraine. He was with those who had divided the ranks of the working class and strangled the Ukrainian revolution, murdered its vanguard, disarmed its militias and turned the lives of the masses of eastern Ukraine into a true hell (equal to or worse than which the oligarchs of Kiev impose on the masses in the west).
That Savas Matsas participates in such a conference should not surprise any worker. Matsas has a long history, not to say a huge record, of supporting Stalinism in Eastern Europe and throughout the world (even supporting Gorbachev himself).
Already in 2014, at the international conference of the EEK, the PO of Argentina and the DIP of Turkey, with Stalinist groups such as the NAR (New Left Current for Communist Liberation) and the Unified Communist Party of Russia of Mitina, voted for an ultra-red program that was pronounced by a united, independent and socialist Ukraine. But Mitina, founder of the union of Communist Youth (Komsomol) of Ukraine and Russia and a Putin's official until 2008, who months before the EEK and PO conference had been appointed as representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the "Donetsk People's Republic” to Moscow, andis a declared enemy of an independent and Soviet Ukraine, not only supported the annexation of Crimea at the hands of Putin but also called on Russia to annex the Donbass to found the Confederation of Novorossia, that perfidious Stalinist policy of popular front to divide the ranks of the Ukrainian workers.
A year later, in May 2015, European Stalinism landed in the Ukrainian Donbass, clothed with the program, the support and greetings from currents who call themselves Trotskyists such as the EEK of Greece itself or the SWP and the Greek coalition Antarsya (in which sister groups of the NPA, the anti-capitalists and the Unified Secretariat participate together with Stalinist parties). They could not have done it without the collaboration of the former Trotskyists, because the PCs from Ukraine, Rusia and all of Europe had been short time before supporting the hated Yanucovich government that had implemented the worst IMF plans against the Ukrainian masses. After that May 2015 meeting, dozens of rebel commanders and hundreds of workers were assassinated that had refused to abide by the Minsk counter-revolutionary agreements between imperialism, Putin and the Ukrainian oligarchy of Donbass and Kiev. Thus began the handover of the revolution from within and the disarmament of the miners' militias in eastern Ukraine.
The counter-revolutionary agreements of Minsk were imposed iron and fire against the masses, thanks to the activity of the fifth column of Russian and European Stalinists that traveled to Ukraine supported by former Trotskyists such as Savas Matsas. This Stalinist policy of "anti-fascist fronts" with the "progressive" and "democratic" bourgeoisies led Matsas to end alongside the Eastern European Stalinist parties that went to defeat Donbass from within, and also with Putin's friendly oligarchs, Putin's ardent defender Mitina and men from the European far-right such as the Belgian Kris Roman, linked to the KluKluxKlan, with whom he shared that conference in May 2020. And it is no coincidence that also in Syria Mitina and Kris Roman coincided, organizing a mobilization in support ofal-Assad and Putin in Damascus, because imperialism and all its agents concentrated their forces in Ukraine and Syria, with Stalinism and the former Trotskyists painting that hitman of imperialism Putin as "friend of the peoples".
Savas Matsas is the same one who few years ago brought self-claiming Stalinists like Darya Mitina -who in 2018 was at the PO conference at the UBA in Buenos Aires and every year visits Stalin's grave to bring him flowers- to the late international of the PO, and today he lectures along with the Castroites in Greece or with Stalinists in Russia and Ukraine... And he also forges a place for himself in the New Left, together with former Trotskyists fused in deals, parties and class collaboration fronts with Stalinist currents, which he embellishes and paints left so that they can go on fulfilling their counterrevolutionary role in Europe, striking a further backstab at the working masses in Ukraine.
